Our Ethos

There has been no compromise in our renovation and refurbishment of Waitby school – we have insisted upon the very highest quality materials, furniture and soft furnishings; these have been specified by a well-known award-winning local architect and a talented interior designer.

This is not just another holiday let – self-catering does not need to mean compromise in quality, comfort or design. Our guests feel as if they are staying in a boutique hotel. It is the little touches that make the difference.

But we also believe firmly in creating the least possible stress on the environment and in supporting the local economy. Local builders and craftsmen, using traditional techniques and materials, have worked on the renovation.

Whenever feasible, materials and supplies have been sourced locally, from the windows and the hand-built kitchen, the slate in the kitchen and bathrooms, and the stone floors, to the luxury bed linen and towels.

Accommodation

Waitby School sleeps up to seven people.

The main entrance is through the old school cloakroom, which retains its original coat pegs and sink, as well as a traditionally tiled floor.

Double doors lead through to the open plan living area, which was the main classroom for the children of Waitby and Smardale; we have retained the original panelling round the room. The floor is of solid oak and the large windows look out onto picture-perfect uninterrupted countryside across the fells. Leather seating and outsize bean bags cluster around the wood burning stove for cosy evenings in. The flat screen TV and Bose sound system with Sky package ensure that you can relax and unwind.
